World Smile Day
Observed on October 4th, 2024.
What is World Smile Day?
World Smile Day takes place on the first Friday in October each year and celebrates acts of kindness and helping people smile. People worldwide are encouraged to help others and do any act of kindness, no matter how small.
How was World Smile Day Created?
World Smile Day is a recent holiday, founded and held from 1999 onwards. It was created by the inventor of the smiley face, Harvey Ball. He came up with World Smile Day as a day devoted to kindness and joy.
How can I be Kind?
You can be kind in any way, even in small acts, and it still has a big impact. So on World Smile Day, remember to be kind. Here are some simple acts of kindness that everyone can do:
Be polite - Say “please” and “thank you”
Compliment someone
Help someone if they’re having a hard time - You can help someone with a math problem or a hard question
Pick up things that someone dropped - Like a pencil or book
Hold the door open
Be there for someone - If they’re feeling down, help them feel better
Apologize if someone’s mad at you
Simply smile!
The Impacts of Being Kind
Even if you don’t realize it, kindness can have a big influence on others’ health. Kindness can affect a person’s mental health; it can increase the production of chemicals in the brain that deal with happiness, lower anxiety, increase self-esteem, and improve someone’s mood. It can also increase empathy, decrease loneliness, improve relationships, and encourage others to help more people. Being kind can also help the physical body by lowering blood pressure.
