How Colors Can Affect Mood

Trevor Miyagishima

Emotions, feelings, and mood are the defining characteristics of your mental state which determines your motivation to do certain tasks and socialize with others. They can also affect sleeping habits as constant agitation and activity makes the brain work more which decreases drowsiness. Additionally, stress from various perpetrators can decrease productivity by causing your brain to focus on worrying and anxiety rather than the goal at hand. Therefore emotions are incredibly influential to your overall wellness. It may seem as though they are guided by surrounding actions taken by your own self as well as others, however there are other factors as well. One that is often overlooked is colors, which are physical attributes of every object and living being. There are various shades, tones, hues, and tints of colors that they can have a profound, unique effect depending on certain types. Knowing when to utilize certain colors to positively influence your own and others’ emotions is therefore vital information to have in order to enhance overall wellness and health.

Warm colors (red, orange, yellow, etc.) tend to evoke energetic, dynamic emotions such as happiness which can be motivational and spark creativity and hard work as a result. This is likely due to the fact that they are bright which your brain connects to sunlight which shines during spirited activities outdoors. Neon shades of other colors, including blue and green, accomplish a similar effect. Conversely, cool colors (blue, green, purple, etc.) usually foster peaceful, serene, and poignant moods which can aid in keeping calm during stressful situations and reflecting upon memories of events that you enjoyed. This allows for personal acceptance as you contemplate your accomplishments and shortcomings, ultimately creating personal reform and satisfaction in life as a result.

Furthermore, colors are associated with ideals related to their warmth and physical objects to manufacture specific connotations that convey concepts and images that affect your feelings and mood. For instance, red is often correlated with rage, passion, and love. The former is due to fire, which is red and destroys things by burning them, as it is ruinous feeling that leads to destruction. The latter two is seemingly because hearts are red and moreover beat quicker and more noticeably when with someone you love. Another example is green which tends to represent vitality, growth, and corruption. Each of these relates to nature, specifically plants, as many are green. Plants blossom exquisitely and serve as sustenance for other living beings which demonstrates vitality. Additionally, they flourish and spread throughout pieces of land which portrays growth. Finally, weeds are plants that situate themselves among others and steal their nutrients which is corruption within them.

The feelings you experience through the majority of your life comprise your emotional and mental well-being and give you motivation to live and achieve various goals as well as tasks. Without motivation, other dimensions of wellness would suffer. For instance, you would lack reason to perform physical activity which would detract from physical wellness as your body necessitates utilization of itself in order to ensure it works properly. Additionally, physical activity uses calories which prevents a build up that would contribute to unhealthy weight gain. Another illustration of the phenomenon of mental health affecting aspects of wellness is lack of desire to explore new things and expand your knowledge of the world. This is an adverse influence upon intellectual wellness as thinking is underutilized and comprehension of various topics and issues is repressed. When dimensions of wellness suffer then your life and existence can be in danger as those keep your body functioning properly to continue living. Therefore, emotional health is an essential component of your being and should be improved where there are limitations. You can wear clothes or possess objects of certain colors to encourage your brain to connect them to certain positive feelings such as joy, courage, or curiosity. Besides, this can positively affect others around you as they will notice these colors as well and make similar connections within their mind.
